Simple Steps to Blogging Success – 10 Essential Blog Habits

Blogging Success

Habits, Routines, Patterns and Cycles. Success is not a one step phenomenon, it’s built upon the actions you take over time. I like to sum it up like this:

Success Is Not What You Do, It’s What You Do Daily

Think Bruce Lee became a Martial Arts genius without diligent repetition and practice? Michael Jackson learned to do the Moonwalk one rainy Sunday afternoon when he had nothing else better to do?

Think again. Mastery take practice.

Consistent effort compounded over time leads to results.

10 Simple Habits for Blogging Success

The First 5 Habits…

#1 Read Other Blogs

Pick blogs in your niche. Even add the odd one which is successful in other related or interesting niches.

Don’t just stick with the obvious ‘niche leaders’. Check out forums sich as Blokube and Blog Engage to discover new blogs. Look for interesting comments on blogs you read already and follow the links back to the commenter’s blog.

Apart from the networking potential, the blogosphere offers an endless supply of ideas and inspiration for your own posts.

Keep an eye out for opportunities to do guest posts or Joint Ventures…

#2 Comment on Other Blogs

Since you’re reading them, stop and leave a comment. Threefold advantage:

  1. Will give you a backlink. Dofollow blogs with CommentLuv and Keywordluv installed (like this one) offer the most benefit from this perspective. Make a point of visiting some high PR blogs on your commenting rounds too (SEOQuake is a good free tool to help you check website stats)
  2. Good comments (especially on popular, high traffic blogs) will attract traffic via your link and CommentLuv – helped by delicious, irresistable headlines of course…
  3. It’s a great way to build relationships and network with other bloggers, and you’ll often find they reciprocate and comment on your own posts

Find a number that works for you. 5 a day is a good number to start with. Consistency is good, and within reason, the more the better – just don’t be one of those spammy types who leave brief comments based on the key post idea without actually reading it (you’ll get tagged as a spammer if you do)

#3 Feed Your Head

“If you think Education is Expensive, try ignorance” ~ Derek Bok

Study Stuff. Feeding the old grey matter and you’ll increase your value. The more value you have to share, the better your blog will become.

Even beyond your niche – learning about Blog Optimization, Copywriting, SEO and Marketing will give you skillsets with which to improve your blog. Education is not an expense…

#4 Analytics

Any idea who’s reading your blog? Where did they come from? Ehat’s working and what’s not?

Keeping some kind of a track on your visitors and readers is essential, and easier than you might think.

Read my post on Blogging Analytics for more on the why and how of analytics.

#5 More Spokes for Your Online Wheel…

I’m sure most people don’t need any more encouragement, but I’m going to recommend that you spend some regular time on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, G+ and/or other relevant Social Media platforms.

Strategically of course.

Every time you write a post, make sure you share it as widely as possible. Link your profiles and integrate them with your blog to make it easy for people you connect with to find your blog and content.

When you read other posts you like, share them too. Sharing relevant, quality content (not just your own) positions you as a source of useful information, which builds trust and authority.

Not to mention, you’ll often get shares and votes back from the people you’ve been supporting in this way.

  6. What a grand reminder to take time for the little things each and every day. The continued effort each day is what brings grand success in the long run.

For example, blogging. One way to develop a strong following and be recognized in a niche is to post quality comments on many blogs – and converse actively. You do this daily, every day, and you’ll be surprised at what you can accomplish.

You can’t expect grand things to happen with commenting though if you just place a random comment here and there every few weeks. That just doesn’t work well.

Thanks for the advise on commentLuv and keywordLuv I am going to add those to my wordpress blog- does this make the blog do follow?

    • Jym says:

      You’re welcome Grant.

CommentLuv comes with options to make the CommentLuv links dofollow or not (mine are set automatically to dofollow).

KeywordLuv allows commenters to add anchor text keywords after an @ symbol, much as you’ve done in your comment. It doesn’t make the link dofollow though.

For that you want to install a dofollow plugin – my favorite and the one I’m using here is called ‘No Nofollow’

More info on all these in my post on the ComLuv link below

    • Grant says:

So I can make my commentLuv links do follow but have to add the plugin to get the keywords to be do follow- if someone puts an contextual link in a post does that become do follow as well or is it nofollow again by default on wordpress?

These are all simple yet HIGHLY effective tips. The biggest one I can speak to from personally experience is commenting. It truly is fun, mutually-beneficial, and a great networking opportunity!

I love commenting and participating in discussion boards/groups because you add value to the core content, engage others, and really help each other out. It also builds credibility so you can’t go wrong!

The analytics part makes the data nerd in me very happy. I just posted a blog entry about something similar today: digital footprints. I think it builds upon the wonderful points you have already made here.

Thanks for sharing and I hope you’ll visit my Unbounce.com guest blog/contest entry and share your thoughts. Please like and tweet too. =o)

Great tips! I especially agree with “Feed Your Head.” I get so busy doing the day to day business stuff, I can forget to take care of me and make sure that I’m growing! I believe that my business can’t go to new levels if I can’t :)

  17. Deeone says:

    Awesome post Jym.

Being a pretty new blogger, I practice most of these daily. I will say that I probably need to step up my game a bit about understanding SEO and getting a better grasp on how to use the analytics aspect of my blog. I check out my site stats a couple of times a day, but I think it may need to be more detailed then that. Definitely somethings to think about. I’m constantly trying to learn more about the craft though. And article post such as this come much in handy. Thanks for sharing. :)
