How to Use Facebook Comments Plugin to Drive Traffic to Your Blog

Facebook’s Comments Plugin allows bloggers to add a user commenting system to any piece of content on their blog. When it’s installed on your blog, visitors will be able to comment as their Facebook profile or Facebook Page.

In this post I’m going to share with you why bloggers should use Facebook’s comments plugin alongside their current commenting system and how to install it on your blog.

Facebook Comments Plugin

Advantages

1. Familiarity

Facebook’s commenting system is very familiar to its 800+ million users, which means new visitors to your site won’t struggle with writing a comment or logging to a comment system they don’t recognize. As such, they’re more likely to comment (and Like) – helping your post appear in more people’s news feeds (Learn more about how this works in my post on Facebook’s Edge Rank Formula)

2. Traffic Generation

This is my favorite part aspect of the Facebook Comments Plugin: Commenters can also choose to have their comments posted to their Facebook wall (profile or fan-page), and it will then appear as a post in the News Feed of their friends and fans, raising awareness and driving traffic back to the your blog!

Example: A Comment on my Blog that Appeared on my Visitor’s Wall.

3. ‘Synched’ Comments

Users can choose to have their comments posted to their Facebook personal Profile Wall or Page Wall, (depending on how they posted). Any Likes and comments made inside of Facebook will automatically sync with the comment on the originating blog.

4. Platform Login Support

Users can login to the plugin with their Facebook, Yahoo!, AOL or Hotmail.

5. Accountability (Spam Prevention)

Facebook’s Comments Plugin does not allow unnamed comments. Because users are contributing under their Facebook Profile name (or Page), using this commenting system significantly reduces the number of spam comments blogs typically received on a busy blog.

Disadvantages (and Solution!)

Occasionally the plugin and commenting system has technical issues, but Facebook is always very quick to fix them. Also, some visitors do not wish to comment through Facebook’s system.

Solution: Use the Facebook Commenting System with one of the other Systems mentioned above.

Consider using the default WordPress Comment System, or other plugins like Disqus and Intense Debate. In other words, don’t rely entirely on the Facebook comments plugin, and you get the best of both worlds…

Note from Jym: Enabling the Facebook Comments system on your blog may have a slight impact on page loading speed. Depending on other factors this shouldn’t be a significant issue though. Once you’ve installed it. Test using Pingdom.com if you’re concerned about your blog loading speed.

Although there is no CommentLuv or KeywordLuv backlink to be gained from commenting on Facebook Comment’s System, it’s a great way to link back to, promote and raise awareness for your Facebook Page. You do have one, don’t you?

How To Install It On Your blog:

1. To install Facebook comments system on a WordPress blog, you will need to install a cool plugin called Facebook Comments for WordPress - download it and or just type the name into your plugin searchbar inside your WordPress Dashboard.

2. From your WordPress Dashboard, go to the Plugins section and find the Facebook Comments for WordPress row and click the Activate link.

Note: Depending on the number of posts on your site, activation may take a moment because the plugin is caching all of your comment counts.

3. Add the Facebook Developer Application to your Facebook account.

4. Click the + Set Up New App button.

5. Enter an Application Name (the name of your website) and agree to the terms.

6. Click on the Website tab and copy the Application ID and Application Secret from the Settings page.

7. From your WordPress Dashboard, go to the Facebook Comments section under Settings. Then, enter your Facebook application ID and application secret in the first two textboxes. Adjust options if needed.

I already installed the Facebook Comment plugin. But it sometimes embarrassed me because there are times that it doesn’t appear, and if it appears on the page, it always has this message “Warning: this comments plugin is operating in compatibility mode, but has no posts yet. Consider specifying an explicit ‘href’ as suggested in the comments plugin documentation to take advantage of all plugin features.”

I think, I will just take this plugin off my blog.

  2. Great work here. I have just finished an update to my instructions for implementing Facebook Comments and Like Buttons fully optimized for SEO. They answer many of the questions I see here. Please come check it out!

I have to admit that I have seen this on some sites and used it a few times. My only concern is that my friends and family are not as interested in business practices as the clients we work with so I don’t use it. But it might be of interest to our clients. Percolating.

Great post Jym. I love the Facebook Comment Plugin. I’ve had it for a while now and I’ve been getting a good amount of traffic from Facebook thanks to it. It’s definitely a must for any blog to have. Only issue I have, is I don’t get notified when there are new comments. Do you have any idea how to solve this?

    That’s correct Faissal!

The Facebook plugin always brings in some “freshy” look for any blog post. And moreover, it shows Google that there is an active community talking about the post. Another benefit in this post-Panda era :)

    Thanks for sharing man.

Great post, lots of detail. I set up the Facebook comments plugin on my blog and like I can see with yours, no one seems to use it!

I also didn’t like how it added the extra padding after the comments box when there were no comments present so I ended up removing it.

I guess people prefer not using their facebook accounts because they don’t want to post their comments to their wall or perhaps they are looking for SEO value with the followed comments (in some cases).

  19. Hi Faissal,
I’m currently using Facebook Commenting as my main commenting system. I just wonder how it can help you with SEO since this is ajax generated content.

Can you please share some of your valuable opinions on this? Should I install another commenting system side by side with facebook commenting?

    • Faissal Alhaithami from market on facebook says:

I’m not that much into SEO, and I don’t think facebook comment system will hurt your SEO. On other hand, I don’t know how wordpress comment system can benefit our SEO.

I suggest you to install another comment system beside facebook plugin, not because of the SEO but due to the technical issues that your visitors may face commenting though it.

      Thanks for you question ;)

  20. Faissal, this is a comment feature I’ve seen on other sites and have wondered about. The Facebook authorization and user comfort level seem promising. I’ve started using CommentLuv, which is a big hit. Theory: Facebook commenting might appeal to consumers (good visitors for marketing) while CommentLuv is definitely going to appeal to other bloggers.

    Hi Faissal,

Great information and awesome tutorial! I’ve had the Facebook Comments Plugin installed for a while now, but find that people seldom use it. I know it’s great for traffic, recognition and social proof, and let’s not forget Facebook EdgeRank which is huge in its own.

Maybe in time more people will get used to using it.

  25. Tory McBroom says:

I switched a few of my blogs over to Facebook comments and the number of comments literally cut in half if not more, but my traffic from Facebook went up. And my comment spam is pretty much non-existent. One thing I don’t like is it doesn’t notify me when a new comment is made, unless it’s a comment that I already replied to. I guess there is a way to setup notifications, but I, and a host of others, couldn’t get it to work.

  26. I also don’t use FaceBook comments when placing a comment, since I separate my real people life from my virtual life. Real people (friend on FaceBook) have no interest in all this online stuff and don’t want top see tons of blog comments and other such stuff in their stream.

Hi Faissal, really nice article! I’ve just recently installed facebook comment system. What a neat idea on their behalf. So far I don’t think anyone has used it because people love the comment luv. This might be the one factor that stops people from actually using it. I did something that I suggest Jym do here, increase the width to about 600 so it looks better and even on the blog.
