How Productive Are You?
Before penning this post I wrote 4 blog posts and a newsletter email in 50 minutes.
Seriously.
It was easy, because I intend to engage in productive acts each moment of the day.
I run a home based business blog, cash gifting blog, law of attraction blog and my inspirational thoughts blog, along with 4 lists. I run a number of online businesses. I am an inspirational author, with 2 books published in the last month.
Taking effective acts is my only option.
3 Tips to Boost your Online Productivity
1 – Take a 10 minute break each hour.
Pull back each hour to watch your feelings. You are perfect right now. If unproductive, you hold some limiting belief blocking your productivity. Taking breaks helps you observe your productivity-sapping feelings: your attachment to your writing, to certain aspects of your online business, etc.
Observe these attachments, release them, and let the Universe take over in silence. Be still. Being silent dissolves the blocks to productivity, so you become a productivity machine. All you do will prosper, when the mind becomes silent on a consistent basis.
The Universe simply takes over without ego interference.
Note from Jym: I use the 50 minute blocks to great effect as well – check out my post on Harnessing Your Natural Rhythms to learn more about how and why this is so effective in increasing your productivity
2 – Short and sweet.
Read most blog posts. Can’t you FEEL how attached the blogger is to their writing? Same deal with online business copy. Rambling, and too much filler. Which is a productivity killer. Simplicity, directness and brevity are the ultimate productivity boosters.
Keep posts at 300 to 600 words. Epic posts are OK once in a while but be honest with yourself. Can you relay the same, usable message in fewer words?
Most of your readers are entrepreneurs, bloggers or aspiring folks. Most appreciate usable content: stuff they can read quickly and put into action immediately. So they can prosper quickly, boosting their productivity.
Boost Your Productivity and Help Your Readers:
Say More, With Less
Same deal with copy. Short and sweet. Make an impact instead of starting a ‘snooze fest’.
3 – Persist
Take 10 minute breaks each hour Now, going forward. Do not try it. Do it! Write 300 to 600 word posts going forward, with your next post. Keep your copy short and punchy. 1 or 2 line calls to action. Just do it. Over and over. It becomes a habit.
Since sticking to these steps each hour of each day my team has grown, my ebook sales consistently increase and my businesses flourish. I am travelling Southeast Asia for the year. I’m living in Bali for 2 months now, after living in Phuket for 3 months, Cambodia for 2 months and Bali for a few weeks, back in May. These productivity tips work. I am prospering, and my life is proof of it.
They can work so well for you, if you stick with em!
Your Turn: How do you boost your online productivity?

I maintain a lot of blogs, generally I write the content during the weekend and schedule it to be published on the next week. Taking small brakes definitely help and for sure consistency and good discipline are essential factors for successful blogging.

Great tips Ryan, I’ll try them out and if they work for me I’ll be so grateful to you. I actually was doing my productivity though the epic content and the problem was that it takes a lot of time to be done.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us.

I hear you Faissal… I’m a big fan of ‘epic content’ but it requires a lot of time and a very different approach to the ‘short and sweet’ which Ryan advocates here.
I think there’s certainly room for both, and a productive blogger needs to be able to embrace the points made in this post. Nonetheless – there’s a place for epic, bookmarkable, mega-posts as well.

Hi Jym,
I guess that I’ll work with both, as epic content is very important too and i can’t just leave it behind.

Great post, Ryan! You are so right about the need to be productive and take breaks. I’ve noticed that if I don’t take breaks, I just drag and drag until I get to the finish line. Instead, just taking short breaks (I tend to take 5-10 minute breaks after 20-50 minutes of work, depending on what I’m doing and the natural rhythm of the activity.) can really recharge.

5 to 10 minutes works quite nicely Steve. Recharge, pull back and move into wicked effective action. Thanks! RB

Hi Ryan and Jym,
Ryan, I find that a key to sitting down and being productive for me is to first get very clear on what I want to accomplish. Only when I am crystal clear on this do I proceed.
One of my favorite “tools” is a timer. This ties into your tip on taking a break. I work for about 45 minute at a time, take a short break and go back, again being sure that my actions have been consistent with my focus.
Being a Part Time Marketer, tips like yours are like gold. Thanks for sharing them!

Hi Jym,
Congratulations for bringing up here a A list blogger and online entrepreneur. Your blog is really transformational
Keep the posts coming my friend. Cheers!
Ryan,
You always come up with simple solutions. I fully experienced the episode of being over attached to an outcome. It’s far much better to let it go and let the universe guide you. By taking short breaks you make room for more creative ideas.
I seek to do the most important stuff right in the morning when I have a lot of energy..after that I make time for some exercising personal development and the other tasks.
Also, music helps me become silent and inspired: classical, meditation music or brain wave music. It’s a very soft and nice experience.
Thanks for sharing your tips and mostly for offering your personal example.
Wish you a super day,

While I agree, in principle, with some of this, I have to say that one of your assumptions is faulty: “Most of your readers are entrepreneurs, bloggers or aspiring folks. Most appreciate usable content: stuff they can read quickly and put into action immediately. So they can prosper quickly, boosting their productivity.”
Most of MY readers are not looking for this from my blog, because I write personal anecdotes and fiction. Maybe they’re looking for entertainment to fill their ten-minutes-hourly break.
For most blogs, though, this would be true enough – same for technical “how to” posts and manuals. Good tips!

That’s a fair point Holly,
Some blogs are aiming to entertain rather than educate. Wouldn’t it be a boring blogosphere without them?
If I wasn’t so pragmatic by nature, I’d probably aspire to do both at the same time…

I think it is definitely important to take breaks. I also find that I have times where I am precisely focused and other times where it is difficult to focus. I try to save my higher level writing for the times where I am most focused and lower level tasks for times where I lack focus. Enjoyed the post!

Great post. I had that problem for awhile trying to balance my blog, business and website plus being a mum is a lot of time and work too. So when I began to stress less about everything, went with the flow and began to focus on hour by hour my productivity increased and so did my sales. Thanks for the tips by the way. I used to write half a novel on a post and now cut back too, like you said, less is more. Thanks for tips.
My pleasure Tanja

Ryan, thanks for the motivation and kick in the pants! I like to think I use my time wisely, but some days I don’t and I end up working at night. Those days are few and far between, but my goal is for every day to be productive. Something I always do is list my top five tasks for the day. When I’ve accomplished those, I feel more inspired to accomplish even more.
I couldn’t agree more about keeping blog posts between 300-600 words. No one has time to read long, drawn-out blog posts. Thanks for an excellent post!

Hey Jym,
I came to this post by way of Tosin’s Facebook group. There are so many things going on that it’s sometimes hard to get away from the computer.
I just started doing jumping jacks and pushups every hour or so. Not a lot. Just 20 or so of each and it helps me stay focused for another hour.
Glad I crossed your path.
Luv the strategy Allen! I exercise too during some of my breaks. Keeps the blood – and energy – flowing. Thanks! RB

Hey Jym great advice. I think tracking what you’re doing online is so important for productivity. What I like to do is post a comment in between every tweet or two. I try and engage with as many bloggers as I can from blog engage but sometimes it’s just not possible. I have however been putting a lot of more time into commenting on our members sites. Obviously the largest deterring factor is lack of interest. Your articles tend to have an ease to them that allow for general conversation but some articles don’t so I can’t even comment if I want to. Blog engage is awesome for increase in productivity when it comes to looking for new blog articles to engage. The site saves me tons of time.

Love the commenting/Tweeting Rhythm Brian.
I know you have a ‘special affinity’ with BlogEngage, but as a relatively new user I have to agree, it’s a brilliant source of varied an quality posts
There’s only so much commenting you can do, It’s a great way to market, link build, network and engage – but not leveragable. I dont’ agree with outsourcing blog comments…
Thanks for taking the time to stop in mate!

Great tips Ryan! You know I also agree with Tory, I also make a to do list the night before. You couldn’t be more right about pacing yourself by taking a break every hour. You want to get the most out of a day without getting burnt out! Great article!I want to know more about your books, I used to live in Phuket too, in Nai Harn. What’s Cambodia like??

Great tips Ryan! I like to make a to-do list the night before of everything I want to get done. It helps my mind stop racing at night so I can sleep better when I have clear plan for the next day. Plus, I know exactly what I want to get done instead of aimlessly jumping from project to project.

Motivational post Ryan!
Just to know the fact that you have written 4 posts before this one is awesome- great learning lesson for sure!
I agree with taking a break for a few minutes every hour, though writing short posts is something I need to do! I get carried away by the flow of words and feel that the maximum information a post delivers the better it is- so that readers don’t have to look around for more of it.
Yes, if the post is a general one- a shorter length one would do, but where we are wanting to convey a how-to or tutorial or explaining somethings, longer is better
Thanks for sharing these great tips Jym and Ryan
