9 Reasons Why Your Blog is Generic and How to Make it More Unique

Just Another Blog in the Sea?

Make Your Blog Unique

Look. I’m not actually saying that your blog is the same as all the rest but far too many of the blogs I visit on my adventures across the blogosphere are (let’s face it) ‘a bit samey’.

Nothing too wrong about that per se but here’s the rub:

If your blog doesn’t stand out, less people will:

  1. Click your headers or links (and arrive at your blog in the first place)
  2. Stick around to read your content
  3. Comment upon and share your content
  4. Follow your recommendations
  5. Buy your products
  6. Be your friend (kidding, kinda)

Ding-a-ling-a-ling! Alarm bells… I hope you want to avoid the above from happening to you. I do. My blog’s not perfect yet by any means but I like to imagine that I’m trundling along in the right direction.

9 Reasons Why Your Blog May be Blending in With the Wall Paper in the Blogosphere, and What to do About it…

#1 – You haven’t customized your theme
Change the colors (at least a bit). Shuffle the widgets around. Get your blog out of ‘out of the box’ mode. (you can think functional on all of this stuff too, it doesn’t – and shouldn’t – be random

#2 – You’re using the same theme as everyone else

I know there’s some moderately watertight arguments for the popular premium themes out there (yes Thesis, that means you). I may just ignore my own advice on this one soon – certain themes do offer better optimization potential and faster loading speed.
But there’s plenty that do a good job and look great. Check out Flexibility (which you’re looking at now). Check out Atahualpa. Check out Swift, Hybrid, Carrington, Woo themes…

The point is – just because others are using it (and marketing it hard as affiliates) doesn’t mean its the best. It does mean you’ll have to work harder to inject some originality into it though.

#3 – You’re copying the same blogger/guru/course/system

OK we all have to start somewhere, and obviously we learn from the successes (and failures) of others, or following blueprints which have worked etc. But sometime or another every little birdie has to leave the nest. Take the principles and core elements of your mentors or blogging ‘heroes’ and somehow make them your own.

#4 – You haven’t got a customized header

I know that a blog title and tagline can look clean (even ‘professional’) but it’s boring, and in most cases not doing your blog justice. Check out fiverr.com and get something put together for $5. If it doesn’t work out spend $10 trying a couple more and keep the best. Bigger budget? Check out 99designs instead. Somewhere in the middle? Contact me and we’ll see if I can help you.

#5 – You’re using generic keywords in your title and tagline

In the Internet Marketing niche? Hey! Me too! Avoiding fixing your aim on stuffed to the gills niches like ‘MLM’, ‘Personal Development’ and ‘Internet Marketing’. Have them in your tagline with other keywords if you must, but a better idea would be to get creative, and/or search for a more long-tailed keyword focus.

#6 – You’re using the default ‘language’ across your blog

There’s plenty of places where a moment’s consideration and creative flare can add to the feeling that yours is not ‘just another blog’. Try changing some of these snippets of text:

- Search box

- Comments section

- CommentLuv text

- Navigation Tabs

- Widget titles

An online thesaurus can be helpful here.

#7 – You’re writing the same posts as everyone else (with the same old titles)

’5 Easy ways to increase blog traffic’

‘How to use Social Media for Internet Marketing’

‘What my 5 year old taught me about blogging’

‘Why I love network marketing’

Sure, we have to start somewhere. I actually used two of these (close enough anyway) in my very early days as a blogger so of course I forgive you (and myself) but please try to blog outside the box.

In fact, how about climbing out of it too? Maybe even turn it upside down and stand on it – you’ll get a better view, and maybe write better posts too (the world will love you for it!)

#8 – You haven’t found your blogging voice yet.

Eminently forgivable, but nonetheless an essential step in the evolution of any blogger. This one is more a function of time served than anything else. The way you blog may well be(come) more akin to the way you usually speak than the way you usually write.

Let’s face it – blogging is a chatty medium. It took me almost a year to find my blogging voice, and since them I’ve been largely neglecting it in favor of practical postings but that will be remedied very soon (starting with this very post in fact).

#9 – You’re using SEOPressor as if its suggestions were the law.

Don’t get me wrong, SEOPressor is a very helpful tool for tweaking your in post SEO and thus increasing your chances of gracing the hallowed #1 spot for your chosen keywords. BUT following it’s recommendation blindly and mechanically leaves posts with ‘SEOPressed’ stamped all over them.

You’re better of with my free Blog Post SEO Cheat Sheet (although the two together make the post optimization process a whole lot easier and better). Download it for free by clicking the +1 button at the end of this post (read more here about Google +1 and getting more +1 clicks)

Here’s the deal. Blogging is Marketing

You may or may not be selling or promoting something for cash, but you’re certainly sending your ideas and content up the flagpole and waving them around for the world to see (if not, why blog?)

As such the success of your blog rests firmly and soundly upon it’s ability to offer something unique, or something in a unique way. That ‘something’ must touch a nerve in your readers, tickle an emotional chord and somehow serve up a juicy portion of solving their problems, entertaining, enlightening or otherwise leaving them feeling enriched.

That’s what attracts them in the first place.

That’s what keeps them interested in reading what you have to say.

That’s what keeps your Alexa ranking on the rise

That’s what serves your blogging goals (revenue/influence/fame/fortune/etc)

Be unique. Reveal your message. We want to hear it. No really, we do.

In fact, I want to hear your message right here in the comments section of this post, as soon as you’ve shared this post with your friends and networks. So tell me – what makes a blog stand out in your eyes?

  1. I really enjoyed this post Jym. In the industry where we are taught “duplication”, we still need to focus on our own individualism and be creative. Our blog is our voice, our presence on the internet. Most people aren’t sure what to do in the beginning, so they “copy” others. Then they realize their blog is generic, and doesn’t stand out. This post is a great guide to help them see what they could do to change that.

You’re right Steven – duplication does not negate individual creativity. The structure and system in MLM should indeed be duplicable, but the style and energy should be your own…

Of course as a beginner it’s fine, and even necessary to copy others. But to develop beyond this stage means finding your own unique expression on various levels.

There’s so much information coming past our eyes every day, having an impact and presenting your unique message or style in a clear and powerful way is more important than ever…

I’ve been considering #4 for a while for some of my sites, as the only one I have a custom header on has a much higher time on site than my others. I find it difficult to split-test a header though and some themes don’t naturally allow for customized headers.

    • Jym says:

I think a custom header is important.

Even apart from the design potential it adds for your blog, it gives a much more professional appearance than a default title heading.

The header space is prime real estate – it’s the first thing that catches a new visitors eye. So making an impact there is well worth a modest investment of time, money or both…

I like what you said about tip number 7. A lot of people are saying the same things on the internet. There is nothing new on their blog. They are you replaying what the guru`s are saying and they are not making their own original content. Its very important that we create our own because it will make us standout from other attraction marketers.

Nice Tip Jym. Have a great day and God bless.

    Hey Jym,

Stop picking on SEOPressor! No, don’t have it on my blog, but I’ve used it on one of the blogs where I’ve written a guest post. I like it but it is maddening in it’s mechanical motivation! (You sure pegged that right! :) )

Your Number 8 got a chuckle from me. Just today, someone told me my last post was “different.” Not necessarily compared to anyone else’s, but compared to my own usual fare.

Worthy list. Hope others are paying attention!

    • Jym says:

      LOL! Awww… Sorry Vernessa ;)

I actually love SEOPressor (and use it regularly), it just has to be employed creatively way for both best optimization results and best readability…

As far as I can tell it’s the same story for ScribeSEO which is another similar plugin, although I haven’t used that one. The ‘one size fits all’ mentality is where the problem lies…

Your last post was certainly different! I loved it, though I was left speechless at the end because it was such a surprising step away from what I’ve read of yours before!

Thanks for a great and entertaining comment. Always good to read your thoughts here…

I do agree about the “one size fits all” comment. I especially don’t line SEOP screaming that I did not use the keyword(s) in the last sentence. LOL

Oh, and #3 … The Gurus, Courses … How about taking the course, swallowing it line and sinker, and regurgitating it religiously to the exclusion of even the new insights you yourself might have gained? I’m glad you pointed that one out. I imagine you just set somebody free. :)

Glad you liked the short story. ;) I love your “speechless” comment. I’d love to have that one over on the post!

Standing out and offering something valuable and unique will certainly help to keep your visitors and reduce your bounce rate.

Other ways include improving navigation so there’s more (relevant and enticing) links for them to explore. Try including some pages in a navigation bar below your header, could be categories, or at least an easy access to information about you (your own story always helps give a human element), your site and your services, a contact form, etc…

I notice you have a long list of recent posts – try bringing it down to 5 or 10 favorites. Another list which may help could be ‘most popular posts’, featuring those which have received the most comments.

Also, (this one’s just a matter of time) simply having more archived content for your readers to look through will help.

The foundation of course is having the right people arriving in the first place – look at where your traffic is coming from, and think about how you can get more precisely targeted visitors, either via different keywords, forums, social media sources etc.

Best of Luck and thanks for commenting

For those that are not getting much interaction on their blog I suggest giving your readers a variety of ways to hear from you! For example if you do a lot of text post mix it up and add video. I recently added audio podcast and the feedback from my viewers has been great! They like that they can listen in and get other stuff done at the same time!

Great idea to add multimedia posts. The change is good and it will appeal to those who prefer different mediums as well. additionally there’s a certain ‘credibility’ which comes with audio and video too.

  14. Hey Jym,

This is interesting, because its something I’ve been doing alot of thinking about lately. Namely, how to stand out from the very crowded blogosphere.

I am in one of the niches (Network Marketing) that is stuffed to the gills with well meaning bloggers, and it is essential here that you somehow standout.

I’ve done many of the things you talked about above, including a header that stands out and finding (or at least trying to fine) my unique voice.

I also have found that narrowing your niche helps you stand out tremendously. When I first started blogging I was talking to all Network Marketers. You can imagine how I blended in.

Now, my blog is focused on networkers and bloggers who work full time and build their business on the side. To make it even more focussed, my ideal cllent is same as above in addition to being a working professional like myself.

Using this strategy I have been able to better stand out and be heard as a blogger.

Thanks for the insightful post, Jym! I enjoyed reading it.

You;re right Bob, Network Marketing is one of the most crowded and competitive niches there is going.

Narrowing down you niche is so important if you want to be able to find and attract targeted visitors to your site, not to mention rank in the search engines…

I can see that you’ve done your homework and worked out your target market to a precise degree – I’m sure that effort will pay off!

As a side note my feeling is that your blog has a distinct feel and voice, set off nicely by the inclusion of you and your wife in your header… It adds a great element of humanity, and besides, no one else will have your smile in the same place on their blog!

  15. There are a few things that make a blog stand out to me. First, it’s appearance. I don’t stick around too long if a blog is cluttered and confusing. I prefer simple, clean and easy to navigate. Quality is also important . . . well-written, solid posts that offer value. Going a little deeper, I like information that makes me think. And I find that I’m attracted to a somewhat “edgy” voice (people who say it like it is) or posts with a lot of character.

  17. Amanda Gordon from Vacuum Cleaners says:

Having a unique blog is definitely nice, perhaps even desirable. But I don’t think it is in any way necessary for success. I have had many blogs and initially I used to sweat over the look and feel of the blog. I would try gazillion themes till I found the one that fit the bill perfectly.

Over a period of time my thinking has evolved. I think to have a successful blog is more about content than presentation. People get used to what they see. I have had blogs running with kubrick template that were quite successful.

    • Jym says:

Good point Amanda. Obviously content is still the essence of any blog. Nice to read that you’ve reached that realization too.

Unique content, content which doesn’t simply regurgitate that of your competitors in a plain, lifeless way, is clearly required.

Depending on the outcome your blog is designed for, and who your target audience are, appearances may indeed play a lesser role.

My main interest ‘blog-wise’ is genuine authority blogs. All of them have distinct characteristics, feel and elements which set them apart from their competition. It doesn’t need to be outlandish, subtle touches can work just as well when applied carefully.

Lovely Vacuum Cleaner blog by the way. Quite unique!

    Hi Jym,

Loved the post and not only because of the awesome value shared as always but yes I did notice the change in blogging voice and it works Jym! Don’t stop…

Funny thing is but the blogs that stand out for me are usually the ones that are not writing about the same topics that everybody else is writing about.

I know there is a lot of excitement about Google +1 but there are only so many posts one can stomach on the same topic unless you are going to present a very different angle to everybody else. Most people just created a news blog post…. Blah!

I also relate to blogs that just break rules and do mad things from a style point of view that everybody else is saying you must not do.

Lastly I can also just feel whether the blogger is comfortable about what they are blogging about and those blogs stand out for me too. There’s a kind of relaxed freedom in the energy that the words communicate, much the same as in this post. :)

Thanks for the cheat sheet and I agree with Jayne… sneaky little +1 trade off which I’ll have to learn how to do too!

I think there is a place for more ‘newsy’ posts, and it can be a great way to leverage topics and moods in the consciousness of your target market, but it’s a lot harder to inject your passion into such content.

As you say, when there’s a popular topic (as with the whole G+ thing right now) there are a multitude of posts covering it – setting yourself apart within the same topic area is not easy and requires a really unique angle.

Alternatively, skip it and talk about something completely different!

As always, I appreciate your insightful and valuable feedback, glad you enjoyed this…

  19. Hi Jym,

that is a terrific post. A bit of creativity is compulsory, is it not ?

An interesting question is also: Who do we write for ? Everybody’s trying to write for the audience, but that doesn’t automatically that we’re good at that or that it’s our passion.

Good marketing through blogging is finding the right blend between writing for our audience and writing for ourselves. When we find that blend, we’re truly unique in the ocean of blogs that come and go on a daily basis.

Probably this blend is what you call “your blogging voice”

I always wonder if Joanne Rowling did keyword research before she wrote Harry Potter – or did she simply write Harry Potter because she had to write it ?!

To me the best combination is writing with passion, alongside a clear understanding of our audience – whether it comes from careful and diligent study, or innate insight into our target readership.

My guess is that Joanne didn’t do any research as such. But I bet she’d done a lot of reading in her time which clued her in to the key elements of her books.

To top it off she more or less created a sub niche with her sheer creative ingenuity. And she’s been paid for it!

  20. Great post, Jym! I think that you are definitely right about what happens when we do like everyone else. I think that one of the biggest issues is the number of people who just put a bunch of stuff from the same three or four gurus. One of the gurus even goes as far as having his own videos in someone’s lead capture page for a series of eight videos. I didn’t realize this when I first started blogging, until I recognized the copy in people’s e-mail. Who do they think that people will remember, them or the guru? Sometimes, I think that letting the guru do all of the work can be worse than doing nothing. Learn from them, yes, but ultimately, it has to be you that someone is getting the information from.

    • Jym says:

      Very true Steve.

I’ve seen and even worked with a systems where the developer of that system provides the content for capture pages and autoresponder series.

This can work well for certain products (and is a good way to set up an ‘instant’ marketing funnel). Also, the big players certainly have great value to teach and share in most cases.

The issue I have with this kind of situation is that you’re ultimately branding the system and its creators, not yourself, your blog and your business. So as you say, people end up remembering the ‘guru’ – not you.

You said it – Valuable Unique content which is relevant to your target market is absolutely the foundation of a successful blog.

Some of these elements simply develop over time, others simply take a decision to address the issue.

In your case, perhaps a logo with your blog name and tagline, and a simple header background may work better than a full banner (like the one on my blog). I think your theme allows that (not 100% sure though so don’t quote me!).

The whole thing is an ongoing process, and it can be a lot of fun to watch the development of your blog over time. Mine has changed a lot…

  23. This is a fantastic list, Jym. Some of these are such little actions but make a big difference (like customizing things here and there). I think of everything on the list the most challenging, and most valuable, for me was finding my own blogging voice. It took getting myself into a place where I blogged every single day for a while. That worked.

      Thanks Michelle.

I agree, finding your own blogging voice is key to any successful blog, but it’s not something you can cheat with, or follow any particular list of actions to achieve.

Doing what you suggested – posting daily (or more or less daily) for a period of time is a great way to help speed things up a bit…

    Jym,

Great tips and feel good that I’ve done several of these. My theme isn’t like others, my topics I too try NOT to do what everyone else is doing, and I’ve tried not to limit my blog to ONLY Virtual Assistants but to others by adding more to it. I do need to do a few of the tips you mentioned so off to go to fix my upcoming blog for tomorrow.

I may not get loads of people heading over to my blog, but that is ok because I’m happy just being a blogger and learning more on how to improve my writing and more.

    • Jym says:

      Good to hear Leona.

I’ve never seen another blog like yours so that’s definitely a thumbs up ;)

It’s an interesting question as to how far to narrow down your niche – I guess the problem of opening up your niche beyond Virtual Assistants will need to be done carefully to maintain the consistency and relevance for your primary target market.

“I may not get loads of people heading over to my blog, but that is ok because I’m happy just being a blogger and learning more on how to improve my writing and more.”

That’s a great attitude, and I would say the same :) Keep plugging away and you’ll get there… Anyway it’s far better to have a small volume of targeted traffic than a large volume random surfers.

Thanks for coming by and commenting, I appreciate it.

Jym, you sneaky little devil (LOL) Love the +1 trade off! What a terrific idea.

I also loved the post btw, and frankly apart from my blog being HOT pink-ish,I really do need to make it a little less out of the Thesis them box! ie: add a few affiliates (such as Mavis’s) and just snazzie it up.

Keywords have never been too much of a problem, I often do as you suggest and often go with the ones a little less traveled.

Sometimes I have my voice… and sometimes I don’t, but I know you forgive me for this!

    Great post Jym as always!

    see you soon

  26. Jym, what an awesome post! Not only will your cheat sheet help me with your blog posts, but you have really reinforced my plans for my new blog and validated what I have already done with my older blog.

    Off to “cheat” now! :)

  27. Hi Jym!

Thanks for inviting me back to your Blog…from The Blogging
    Mastermind Comment Tribe’s page. :)

We, not only as Bloggers but as individuals, must NEVER drift
away from our own uniqueness. Since our Blogs are ‘our personal
space’ on the ‘net, this is our time to truly shine as we
    showcase & strut our stuff.

You know it’s funny, some of the Top Earners Blogs that I’ve
visited are kind of ‘plain jane’ & it’s hard to believe that
they perform the way they do.

    Another fine article my friend!!

We all have a unique perspective to bring to the market place indeed Steven. Why be one of the herd – as you said – it’s an opportunity to shine…

The top earners you’re talking about I guess are Network Marketers (correct me if I’m wrong) and the reason they can get away with plain blogs is that their blog is not their primary income generating tool.

They are branded across multiple channels, and the sole purpose of the blog in those cases is to collect leads.

Even so, they’d do a better job if they stood out in a positive way from all the other blogs in their niche!

Thanks for your comment mate, I always appreciate you sharing your thoughts here.
