Blog Productivity: The Confession
Right now my productivity levels are on the rise. I’m getting more done than ever before, and spending less time doing it. But it hasn’t always been this way.
Up until recently, I was a classic blog-bound caffeine freak. Few breaks and tapping away on the keyboard long into the night with only the scratching of possums on the roof for offline company. Not enough sleep, no exercise, far too much coffee, and a terrible diet (never been a ‘fast food’ guy but full English fry-up – yum!)
Then I started to piece together the ‘Input/Output Connection.’
Long ago I realized that what we ‘feed’ our brains has a huge impact on our lives, and choosing the right mental diet is vital to blogging success (and other areas too, but this post ain’t about that). However, I’ve taken much longer to ‘wake up’ to the impact of physical health on productivity.
Now I have, I’ve begun to make the change.
I cut down the Greasy, fried foods. Unhealthy snacks. Caffeine.
I’m eating simpler, healthier meals, more regularly, and complementing them with a simple daily exercise routine in the mornings, and ‘re-installing’ some regular daily meditation practice.
I’m not a ‘health-nut’ by any stretch of the imagination, and I never will be. But in a remarkably short amount of time, I have greater mental clarity, increased physical energy, and my productivity has been expanded to a whole new level.
Funny thing is, that I’m actually spending less time on my blog and business. But I’m achieving far, far more.
Healthy Blogger = Productive Blogger
Results are built upon productivity and performance.
Productivity and Performance are built upon healthy functioning.
Healthy functioning is built upon healthy food, lifestyle and input.
I’d love to have a precise formula of exactly what to eat and do to create this, but I’m not a nutritionist, and there are far too many schools of thought on what’s the healthiest food to eat.
What works for me may well not be what works for you.
Fuel for the Productivity Blogger
That said, here’s some guidelines you may find helpful:
- Go easy on junk food, caffeine, alcohol, and sucrose.
- Eat food which contains the energy of the sun – fresh, non-processed, organic if possible.
- Raw fruit and vegetables work well for me. A good balance or food groups. Home made juices and shakes are quick, easy and can be packed with vital nutrients.
- Wrap that up with some kind of daily exercise. Could be Yoga, Running, Walking, Swimming, Weights, Aerobics, or whatever works for you. Do something to move your body and engage your whole ‘body-mind’ system is crucial to maximizing your performance.
- Get enough sleep is the foundation of optimum performance (I’m still working on that one)
- Meditate daily (sitting quietly focusing on your breathing is fine) will inject an extra boost to mental clarity.
Blog for an hour or two less per day and take care better care of your physical health instead. I guarantee you will become a more productive blogger.
It’s working wonders for in my life.
What have you got to lose? Even if I’m wrong (I’m not) you’ll feel better, have more energy, and live a longer, healthier life.

Great to see you have turned your life around, healthy eating, and more exercise will give you more energy and allow you to do more, well done.
Hi Jym,
I love this post! Those are all such great tips for taking care of ourselves – with the added benefits that you mentioned such as more productivity! One thing that I need to work on is getting more regular exercise. I know how much better I feel when I do!
Congratulations on your changes!

I can see the rest of the suggestions, but I run on caffeine literally I am the closest thing to having an IV drip of it. I drink 5-6 cups of coffee per day and strong brewed Iced Tea when not drinking iced coffee or hot coffee all day long. I even drink at least 1-2 cups of coffee up until I go to bed at night. I will often finish up an 8oz cup of coffee at 9/10pm and then go right to bed after. (brushing teeth first of course or I would have brown teeth).
I do sometimes hit the gym and hit it hard for an hour a few times per week and often get a boost of energy after but have a BIG TIME crash about 2-3 hours later. I also find I have to work out early in the day, never muster up the oomph if I say I am going to hit the gym after work.

I was more or less on an IV coffee drip up until recently as well Justin… Could never have one ofter about 8pm though or I don’t get to sleep till after 2!
I’m finding as I east more healthily, that I’m becoming more sensitive to the things I put in my body, and noticing more how after the initial ‘rush’ of energy and focus, sweet coffee (I like it sweet!) leaves me drained and foggy.
I still have 2-3 cups a day, but I’ve substituted fresh juices and loads of water for the others. Problem is I love coffee, so I have no intention of giving it up entirely!
Certainly agree it’s much easier to do the exercise routine in the morning, plan it for later and it’ll get lost in the activities of the day… Always found the gym didn’t inspire me – I prefer the gentler activities like Yoga and Tai Chi. The main thing is to get out of the seat at our machines and do something with our bodies form time to time!
Thanks for sharing your take with this Justin, it just goes to show that you don’t have to give up coffee to run a successful blog!

I find that I never had the patience for Tai Chi or Yoga, though I did “Yoga” on the Wii Fit, I find I respond better when hitting heavy weights and leaving the gym in pain. I became almost addicted to the sore pain you feel when your muscles are all torn after a work out. Felt like progress, I also went on the theory that muscle burns more fat at rest so by building muscle it would help increase my metabolic rate.
Either way, exercise is something we all need and especially true if your job or blogging keeps you sitting on your bum all day. Unless you have a treadmill desk where you walk and work all day you need some physical activity.
I’ve always been rather health-conscious … okay, let’s make that Weight conscious and therefore health conscious … but it was your ‘caffeine freak’ moniker that got my attention.
Having been a barista at Starbucks for 8 years ~ you know, drink all the coffee you want for free! ~ I’m only now beginning to realize just what a caffeine addiction I have and how necessary it is to wean myself off it.
And it’s so easy to lose track of how many gallons I’ve drunk when I’m wading through blogs and comments and plugins oh my.
Thanks for the nudge, sir!
Glad I came to visit.

I’m sure 8 years at Starbucks would have been a vary caffeine fueled experience Jaqui!
It’s such an accepted drug in our cultures today that it’s almost a revelation to actually see caffeine addiction for what it is!
I love coffe and have no intention of ever giving it up all together, but too much of anything… well, you know.
Happy to give you the nudge and thankyou for your visit, and comment.

Hi Jym,
Good to hear you are looking after yourself physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually.
I too became blog bound (like that phrase) at the beginning of the year and had to regain some balance. I usually work for 90 mins then take a 15 minute break throughout the day. Can’t remember where I read it but it was a great book!
Enjoy your day,
Eleanor
Nice point Eleanor… The frequent, short break approach works wonders.
I’m experimenting with 50 minutes work, 10 minutes break, with a half hour break every two hours for a small meal. We’ll see how it goes!
Thanks for coming by and sharing your rhythm

I agree that a healthy person is a happy person. I love your suggestions. I think a balanced life will make blogging much more productive.
I have been trying to eat healthier foods. It is a process but I am coming around.
Thanks for an inspiring post.

But I can (happily) say that I’ve reached a ‘tipping point’ and am heading in the right direction more than ever before which feels great.
Thanks for coming by and being inspired!

Jym,
Great post here.
All things in moderation. It’s about balance. And I know it’s hard to do.
I simply use a daily to do list, and it includes my excerise, diet, activities, rest, reading, etc. for the entire day.
This keeps me on point and “balanced.” I can be productive and still have some time left to relax.
Nice post and great blog!
Chuck

Thanks Chuck, Geat to have you here and I appreciate the ‘thumbs up’.
Nice touch to include your exercise, diet, rest and all those elements on your to-do list.
By not including them, I think there’s a tendency to somehow see those things as less important than the activities on the list, even though they’re not.

Great post, Jym! You are so right about getting more done if you feel better. While I only rarely consume caffeine (I lost almost all tolerance I had when I got a stomach infection freshman year of college), I know that feeling of burnout, as well as being wary because if I drink a bottle of pop that has caffeine in it, I can’t sit still well enough to compose coherent thoughts and it actually takes me longer. However, someone could drink the same thing as me and have no effect, so it really is about knowing what works rather than rigid formulas.
Steve Nicholas invites you to read…Applying the Lessons
You’re right Steve, each has to find his or her own level with this stuff.
In a way you’re lucky to be more sensitive to caffeine, I guess it makes it easier to save yourself the trouble and avoid it all together.
Formulas are useful, but we all need to find our own optimum rhythms and nutritional balance. It’s never been the right time for me to get into this in the past, but now I have the enthusiasm for it (well – the results mostly!), it’s working a treat.
Thanks for coming by mate, always good to see you here.

I LOVE the inspirational health stories. I don’t sell anything health related, I’m a health-nut. I “push” the idea that business is a lot like a healthy lifestyle. The similarities in both are consistency, focus, knowledge and balance. It sound like you have found your sweet spot now and I giving you a “virtual” high five!
Thanks for that Sharon – that’s exactly how it feels!
I completely agree with your idea too… Thanks for adding that in your comment, I appreciate it!

Great post here Jym. Always VERY important to take care of our bodies. We sometimes tend to overdo it and our machines break down temporarily causing a halt in our productivity as well. We’re lucky its temporary tho. That’s why what we eat, do and not do is always something to be considered. Thanks for the wake up call here Jym. Keep it up!

Hi Jym,
this is powerful stuff and congratulations to your realizations – and taking action of course. There are certainly a few geniuses who were creative under the influence of mind stimuli like caffeine, alcohol or even more dangerous drugs. They were geniuses in their chosen area but in many many cases the didn’t get very old and they were permanently broke. The French author Honoré de Balzac is an example for that. But anyway, perhaps it wasn’t their goal to live a healthy life.
If our goal is to live a long and healthy life in general and in business, we will have to follow your advice, won’t we ?
Thanks for sharing your insights.
Take care
Oliver

Sure Oliver – certain talents or particular artists have been somehow fuelled by their drug(s) of choice.
I don’t know much about Balzac, but the Opium inspired poets such as Coleridge and the ‘colorful’ days of the 60s characterized by such musicians as Jimi Hendrix spring to mind.
I’m not sure that caffeine ever really did anyone any good, although a lot of people seem to think so.
It certainly makes sense that the healthier we are, the longer and happier are lives will be, and I don’t see no harm in that

Hey Jym, it took my a while to buy into this too. I have always eaten fairly healthy mind you… not a health nut either but lately I have been even more aware as my significant other is on a diet.
What I find is key for me though is sleep. I need my sleep although I fight it tooth and nail. I love to stay up LATE and could hang out online till all hours.
Problem is the next day I feel like I am pulling a piano. Like today… just shattered all day. You’d think I wold learn. So I’m off to kip after another comment or two.
a mentally alert mind makes all the difference for me. I feel excited and energetic, where if I am knackered everything is a struggle and I live in fog.
I have started drinking alkaline water too that is remineralized naturally. My friends actually developed the machine years ago… I only just paid attention.
Oh my goodness… JYM… what a difference. I find we all drink so much water now because it tastes so good… and WOW what a difference a hydrated brain makes.
I always tried to drink a few glasses… but nothing like lately.
I have also started Bikrams Yoga. Again… ‘wow’ what have I gotten myself into.
While standing on one leg in prayer position sweating like a sow… I often zone out into clarity land. It’s brutal but a great way to stay physically fit and it also makes me sleep like a log… that is when I get my buttocks into bed!
I’m totally with you on this..it makes one heck of a difference.
Must say, I still need my two cups of Java in the morning though.

Sounds like you’re on the case Jane!
Just like you though, sleep is my main failing. I’m determined to at least test out quite how effective I can become if I get more though.
From a productivity perspective, it’s all about balancing off the time spent on other activities which improve our focus, energy levels, clarity and concentration with the time it takes to engage in those activities.
Also like you, I haven’t eradicated coffee completely, but I am down to a mere 3 cups a day now. And it’s definitely helping.
Thanks for sharing your take on this too. Here’s to a long, productive and healthy life!

Hey Jym,
Efficiency and staying focus are the keys to productivity. I find that apart from healthy eating, exercise helps a lot for me. After a 5 km jog, I am recharged and looking forward to moving on.
Comparing to just facing the PC to strive for more, doing some exercise will greatly help to relieve your mind and recharge yourself.
Thanks for other tips too (such as meditation though I haven’t tried it properly, just not easy to stay still for 10 min…)
Cheers,
Ming

It’s really important for those of us who spend long hours in front of a computer to take time to get back into our bodies again.
I’m finding the time spent improving my health is increasing my productivity massively when I’m at my desk. Definitely worth while!
If you have the inclination, do try to meditate sometime. Start with 5 minutes if 10 seems too much… But do start!
