SEOQuake Review: Free SEO X-Ray Spex?

SEOQuake ReviewSEOQuake Review – SEO-X-Ray Spex?

Generating free search traffic for even slightly competitive keywords calls for a little detective work, and (dare I say it?) spying on your competition. (For even more spying check out this SpyFu Review!)

Spying on your competition means more than just Googling your keywords and noting the top results. You need to be able to look below the surface for certain pieces of key information about your competitors.

A quick peak with some ‘x-ray spex’ at the wiring under the board of your top competitors pages for the search terms you want to rank for will help you learn how to get ranked for those terms. On top of that, modelling the SEO strategies and tactics of more successful blogs is a very effective way to learn how to lift your own SEO game.

Thankfully there are tools out there which are designed with this purpose in mind, and in this Friday’s Resources and Tools for Bloggers I’m going to have a look at SEOQuake, a free browser add-on which reveals a whole host of info about any page you like.

SEOQuake: Free SEO X-Ray Web Tool

SEOQuake looSEOQuake is a free Firefox add-on, also available for Chrome and Opera. There’s a ‘light’ version with just a couple of basic features available for Firefox, Chrome, Opera and Safari.

Upon installation, SEOQuake (although customizable) is ready to rock’n'roll without any tweaking or adjustments. What it offers is easily accessible stats for any web page including:

- Google Page Rank, inbound links (Google version), cache date, number of indexed pages

- Alexa rank, web archive age

- Yahoo directory presence, inbound domain links (Yahoo version)

- Digg, Delicious, Technorati index links

- Whois info, domain source IP, page source code, robots.txt, sitemap

- Ability to check nofollow links and keyword density.

The list goes on… (it really does!)

It’s fully customizable and can show whichever information you prefer from it’s parameter list, including indexing stats from a number of sites and search engines along with the major ones mentioned above. For the average blogger, the default settings provide more than enough info.

Operating SEOQuake.

SEOQuake can be set up as a toolbar, sidebar or in the status bar at the bottom of your page (I like the status bar, it’s the most discreet). Click the SEOQuake icon to activate it and have it do it’s work for results as you open up a search page.

Here’s it is in action – info like this comes up for every search entry on the page:

SEOQuake ScreenshotIt’s worth noting that Google can frown upon excessive requests for Page Rank information (and punish users accordingly), but the default settings in SEOQuake take this into consideration. Between caching and only requesting stats upon clicking, this should never be an issue for any normal usage levels.

Highlighting NoFollow links

Clicking the ‘Line through nofollow and no-index’ option in the menu to reveal nofollow or no-index links on a page. Want to know if a blog will give you a dofollow link for commenting? Checking whether you’ve forgotten to nofollow links from or within your own blog? This is the tool for you.

The other tool I’ve been using to check nofollow links is the SearchStatus toolbar. The single (to my mind) advantage which the SearchStatus tool has is over SEOQuake is that it ‘pinks out’ any nofollow link, even if it’s an image. SEOQuake only reveals nofollow text links.

This post will tell you more about nofollow and dofollow

Keyword Density Checking

The next handy feature of SEOQuake is it’s meta data and keyword density checker. Simply click on this option when you’re viewing a page, and a new tab opens up revealing title, meta description and meta keywords.

Below that appears a comprehensive table of keyword density, sectioned into 1, 2, 3 and 4 keyword phrases. Customize the results even further with the filter to find exactly the information you’re looking for.

Monitoring keyword density in your own posts, or analyzing your competitor’s use and density of keywords is extremely easy with this handy feature.

Thumbs up for SEOQuake?

Yup. I like this one very much. Not only has it allowed me to remove my Alexa toolbar (read my Alexa.com review to learn more about Alexa) but SEOQuake provides information I need to:

- Monitor my own site progress and stats at a glance

- Optimize my commenting to include higher PR and dofollow blogs (note – I don’t limit my commenting exclusively to those, but it is good to have a healthy proportion of both from a link-building perspective)

- Study competing sites and pages for specific keywords

- Identify high traffic blogs with a view to guest posting

- Analyze and model some of the SEO tactics of top bloggers

Think SEOQuake might come in handy?

I thought so. Here’s the link:  >Download SEOQuake<

Ahha, SEO Xray is on the spotlight :D

I don’t know that SEOQuake offers it but the SEO toolbar from SEOBook does. Anyway, it’s a very good in-depth SEO analysis tool and I really like it.

    Have a nice day Jym!

    Hi,

Really like your blog and the helpful attitude inside it. Ive just installed SeoQuake, wasnt fully aware of the all the functions it presented but have now learnt loads just reading your articles. Thanks a bunch.

    • Jym says:

Thanks Erin, I’m glad to hear your feedback.

I don’t use all the functions of SEOQuake, but I love the way it has several useful tools all rounded up and in one accessible place.

      Definitely one for the toolbox!

I appreciate your feedback and comment Erin. See you around!

I have been using the Alexa Toolbar,
but this one appears to blow that one out of the water.

Thank you for sharing this great news with us!

      It does Martin.

I prefer tools like this one which don’t require a toolbar to be present all the time in the top of your browser… Anyway SEOQuake will give you a whole lot more info besides Alexa, I’m sure you’ll find it useful.

You’re welcome and thanks for commenting mate

I love this tool, I have been using it for months.

One thing I only just realised though it that it stays at the top of the page, it does not hover at the top of your browser. I kept thinking it had turned itself off!

    Hi Jym,

I’ve been using SEOQuake, too. Its really useful and handy. No need to open the toolbar to know the page rank of the site. I personally don’t like toolbars because it makes your screen smaller.lol

  8. Hey! I was using SEO for Firefox – but I tried this SEOQuake now and I like it better. Thanks for the share, Alison

  9. I’ve never heard of it before. But I am checking it out now. I just updated to Firefox 4 and many of my addons stopped working because the developers hadn’t released an updated version of the addon.

Great blog! My name is David and I am seeking blog and website link exchanges with any marketing related blog or website.

Hey! I’d love to do a link exchange with your blog. If you’re interested, please let me know.

    • Jym says:

Yeah, that happens when browsers are updated David – sometimes there’s a small time lag before new versions of the addons are published to cope with the change.

At time of writing, the latest SEOQuake works with the latest Firefox for sure.

I’m not up for link exchanges as such but as you can see, leaving a (genuine!) comment here will give you a link. Once you’ve left three or more comments those links become dofollow. If you enter your blog URL in the ‘website’ field when you comment, you’ll get a link to a recent blog post too.

  10. Adrienne says:

Thanks for giving us all the juicy scoop on this amazing addon. I love SEO Quake but sometimes I need a reminder about what all of it’s features can do. I get use to only using it for one or two things and totally forget all of it’s other cool features. So thank you for this reminder Jym, great job!

  12. Yo Jym,

Great post! Thanks for sharing. I am using seoquake but in chrome because its more crisp and faster than in firefox and I position at the top because its just my preference.. LOL. Anyway this toolbar is very helpful especially if you are into seo because you can have some ideas on the stats of a particular website or blog you are on. And one last thing, their customer service support is so fast and helpful. Have to say Daria is doing very good over there in Russia. Thanks again Jym.

    • Jym says:

Yeah, Chrome is neat Sonny, I agree. I’m highly ‘acclimatized’ to Firefox though, I guess we often stick with what we know in these things…

Good to know about the customer service element – I haven’t had cause to connect with the Daria or the SEOQuake team. Did you have a problem with the plugin itself?

Thanks for sharing your take on this mate

  13. Thanks, Jym. I will add this to my toolbox. The issue is really how often I will employ it. But, knowing it’s there at the drop of a mouse click will be comforting…

Sure Roy, I guess if you don’t need it, no point installing.

That said, even if you only have use for SEOQuake on occasion, it won’t do any harm to have it on hand (or shouldn’t!)

      Thanks for dropping in Roy

  14. Marcus Baker says:

    Hi Jym,

Like Ilka I used this tool quite a bit in the past and I really liked it but then my Firefox slowed down to such an extent I decided to un-install it.

Having read your post and learning more than I knew about it has encouraged me to to go back and re-install. Thanks Jym. I always find the right information comes up when I need it so thanks for being the catalyst in this regard.

    • Jym says:

I’m guessing that the problem of slowing down your browser could have been fixed with more recent versions of both Firefox and SEOQuake Marcus.

I don’t find it slows down mine at all, and I use Firefox almost all the time.

It’s a helpful tool to have on hand, and I’m happy to be ‘the messenger’ for you!

Thanks for your supportive comment mate

  15. Rowena Bolo says:

    Hi Jym,

I thank you so much for sharing this tool. I am currently using Alexa Toolbar, but unfortunately haven’t really paid much attention to its stats and tracking results. The list of the information which SEOQuake can provide really got me excited. I know that I have to take time watching the tutorial videos this time around. Knowing how your blog is ‘performing’ well, I am definitely implementing this tool.

Thanks for always sharing very valuable tools and tips, Jym! ;-)

    • Jym says:

I’m not using the Alexa toolbar at the moment Rowena, although I do still like to check Alexa rank of some sites (including mine) sometimes.

SEOQuake reveals that info along with all the other stuff I mentioned above, and I’m happier with less toolbars up top since they diminish the size of your ‘working screen’

Thanks for commenting Rowena – hope you find SEOQuake useful!

  16. Ilka Flood says:

    Hi Jym,

Thanks for the reminder! I actually had that installed in Firefox and used it in the beginning but then somehow got side-tracked and forgot about it. Time to blow off the dust and use it again :)
