SOPA Strike Update

If you were online last week, chances are you saw something about the Internet Blackout Protest. With the participation of major sites like Wikipedia, Reddit and Google, It even made prime time TV news across the world.

SOPA (Stop Online Piracy Act) and PIPA (Protect IP Act) are the bills being considered by Congress in the US this month, and for the first time ever, internet users stood up with a singular voice and made themselves heard.

For an overview of what these bills would mean for the internet and why it’s so important to stop them, read the SOPA Internet Blackout post I wrote before the strike on January 18th.

Note: that post got well over 3,000 unique page views in it’s first 24 hours – this topic was MASSIVE – Lookout for my forthcoming post later this week on why it was so successful

Internet Blackout Results

Because of the action of web user, bloggers, online companies and webmasters across the globe, SOPA has been stopped.

US Congress has shelved the bill indefinitely.

The following Infographic comes from sopastrike.com, and gives an insight into just how huge the response was across the web to this protest:

If you took any action at all, well done. If you didn’t – this story isn’t over yet and you can still lend a hand.

Help keep this topic alive by sharing this post using the buttons to the left. Read and share other information about SOPA and PIPA, and keep talking about the issue on social media or raising awareness any other way you can.

US Congress votes on January 24th 2012 on PIPA. If you’re in the US, fill in the form at americancensorship.org to add your name to the petition against the bill.

Leave your email address at sopastrike.com to be stay informed if this legislation rears it’s ugly head again and we have to take another stand.

Protecting Freedom On the Web

If like me you enjoy the freedom to use the internet, if like me you run a blog or website, either for fun or as a part of your living, I hope you’ll agree that SOPA and PIPA should be stopped and blocked forever.

Stopping piracy is all very well, but these bills are certainly not the answer.

It was really touching to see everyone participating worldwide… I really loved the graphics on the Wikipedia page too, very dark and gravestone-like, it conveyed the message perfectly.

It’s good to here that this finally stops because of the help of everybody. The power of online users together with big companies greatly help this one.

Hi, Jim! I agree that SOPA and PIPA should be stopped and blocked forever! This will wipe out the small online businesses who cannot afford the high costs of copyright compliance. Internet piracy is bad but these bills are way too harsh. They destroy everything on its way, even the innocent site owners who did not commit the crime at all.

  5. I am so so glad to hear this news. Over 10,000 plus signatures. Well, that is a lot. Thank for this update. No wonder I don’t see any one raging about this anymore! It’s all done and granted because everyone reunited. Congratulations to all of you! Thanks for updating us Jym.

I think that PIPA and SOPA should be of a concern to everybody who lives off the Internet! Even if the topic of your blog doesn’t have anything to do with politics.

I wanted to join the protest, but when I saw the Wiki splash page I realized this: If I want to do this right, I need to also have some impressive splash designed. That was a couple hours before Central; open time, so I couldn’t really do it much justice then.

I read an interesting discussion.. was it a comment on a post? Or some social media discussion? Well, it basically went like this: The SOPA strike is a wake-up call for many people, because as you strike, and your blog is really down for a day, who notices, or cares? Wake-up call!

Hello Jym. I’m glad it has been stopped indefinitely. Actually, this is news to me. Last I heard (read), it has been shelved ‘until further participation…’ I laughed when I read that, but I’m glad it got discarded.

The SOPA protest was really huge. I was able to witness that event. I hated sites going down but their efforts were effective. I hope SOPA will not push through. What site can you not live being down?

    Very informative post!
