The Inspirational ‘Teaching’ of Steve Jobs – A Tribute

Steve Jobs TributeSteve Jobs, 1955-2011

Steve Jobs lost his battle with Cancer today

Has anybody in our time make a bigger impact on the modern world than he did? Possibly not.

Even for those who know little of his story, he lives on in the offices, on the laps and in the pockets of millions.

I’m always left with a strange feeling when someone passes away who’s had an effect upon my life without my ever having met them. Steve Jobs was just such a person, and – love him or hate him – was a creative luminary of our age.

So I offer this post as a brief tribute to a man who literally revolutionized our relationship with technology, and acted as a catalyst in pulling the human race forward into the future.

A man who was a master at understanding the emerging needs of his target market long before his target market ever realized what they were.

A man who successfully sold the entire world solutions to problems they hadn’t even realized they had.

A man who built a multi-billion dollar global technological empire, beginning in his parents garage.

Beyond the technology, Steve Jobs had a profoundly philosophical insight into life. He shares some of this wisdom in this short video of his speech at Stanford University in 2005.

A husband, a father, a son, a friend. But for most of us, a guy we never even met – who seriously changed our world.

Steve was once quoted as saying “I want to put a ding in the universe” and I think it’s safe to say, he did exactly that.

God Bless You Steve.

So long, and thankyou for being.

Steve Jobs was indeed a legend. As to how Apple do their thing for the next five years is still something to see.

Maniacal customer focus. To me that IS Steve Jobs.

He didn’t whine “my customer’s don’t know what they want”; he told them. He told us with passion. That maniacal focus drove him to create products that just work (from work-flow, to appearance, to how they fit in our hands). He will me missed.

Steve Jobs contributed a lot when it comes to our technological advancements. For sure, lots of people will never forget him especially those who are loyal Apple users. I only hope now that his replacement can meet the quality of his work to avoid any disappointments from Apple followers.

Jym, aloha. A great tribute to a great man. What I appreciate about Steve, is that he was congruent with his values. The words he spoke are the way he lived his life.

He definitely knew how to set priorities. To add to this tribute, I would like to share a quote by Steve as well as a brief story about him

“People think focus means saying yes to the thing you’ve got to focus on. But that’s not what it means at all. It means saying no to the hundred other good ideas that there are. You have to pick carefully.”

Steve prioritized. Here is a story about him that I only learned when reading the many articles that have been published since his death. Again, what a clear example of setting priorities.

When Steve met his wife, he was on his way to a big meeting at Apple. He had the car keys in his hand, was at the car and then said to himself “wait, if this were my last night on earth, would I rather spend my time in a meeting or with her.” He dashed across the parking lot, caught up with her and they had been together ever since up until his death. Isn’t that beautiful?

Jym, priorities, knowing your core values, are essential to living the life that you want.

So good to be back visiting you, Jym; it had been far, far too long. Wishing you a fantastic week ahead. Until next time, aloha. Janet

Brilliant quote and wonderful story Janet.

I love how you said no to all the other Steve Jobs quotes being spread around at this time, and selected this one to share here.

Steve was a true example of someone who lived their core values – congruently as you say – and fortunately for us we can both benefit from the results of that and learn from the lessons and signposts he left behind.

Thanks so much for sharing and adding these valuable, precious elements here.

Steve Jobs lived his quotes. I know of no better thing to say about it. He walked his talk. He changed the world before the world knew it needed changing.

  8. Hi Jym,

I can’t thank you enough for sharing this amazing interview. He packed all you need to know about life and personal development into a 15 minute speech, just like Apple packed the whole world into everybody’s pocket. Considering the time, for me the best bed time story I’ve ever heard.

    Be blessed

  10. Hi Jym,

Thanks for sharing your insights about Steve Jobs and for sharing the video as well. Honestly, I saw his face on television and on the internet a couple of times already but it was only this year that I realized that it was Steve Jobs (LOL but true), the star behind Apple. He was such a great man and I agree with what you have said about him. Thanks again and Rest in Peace Steve Jobs.
