Recently I was reading Heather Stephens’ inspiring post about overcoming obstacles on her excellent Clever Marketer blog. She used two powerful, real life examples to illustrate how obstacles can become building blocks to fulfilling your dreams. That reminded me of the story I’m going to share with you now…
I don’t know it’s origin, but the wisdom is timeless – especially for those who are determined to overcome adversity and challenges and live life on their own terms.
The Donkey and the Pit
Once upon a time in a lush, green valley there lived a donkey. This donkey had worked hard all his life on a small farm, but he was getting old. He couldn’t carry as much weight as he used to, his joints ached and he couldn’t walk as fast or work as long either.
There was a dried out water hole on the farm where he lived, which had served as a well for many years. Recently however, the farmer had built a new well, leaving the old one just an empty, soggy pit. Too busy to fill the old well in, the farmer had left it as it was, an open hole in the ground with a puddle at the bottom.
One day, as he was carrying out his daily work, the donkey slipped into the pit. He sank up to his knees in mud – thankfully there wasn’t much water in there, but still he was faced with the problem of climbing out of the vertical shaft. It simply wasn’t possible, and after no one came in response to his calls for help, he resigned himself to his fate. He didn’t have the energy of his youth, and the determination which might have kept him going when he was younger was all but gone.
But the farmer was out looking for him…
“Where’s that old donkey?” he thought.
The farmer heard a faint “heee-hawww” coming from the old well, so he walked over and peered in. The donkey was leaning against the muddy wall of the pit looking forlorn and weary.
“There’s no way!” the farmer said to himself. “It would take to much effort to pull him up, and for an old donkey it’s not worth it. I may as well just buy a new one. I’ll fill in the old well now to save dealing with his body and make sure no one else falls in in future.”
So the farmer gathered his workers and even borrowed some extra hands from his neighbor’s farm to get the the pit filled in and be finished with both the well and the old donkey once and for all. The team set to work, digging earth from nearby and tipping it down the shaft and onto the donkey.
The donkey, who was tired and miserable, didn’t realize what was happening, until a few shovel loads of earth had landed on his back and splashed in the water around him. He looked up, to see the farmer peering down, and shovel after shovel of soil being thrown down from above.
“They’re burying me! He thought. “After all I’ve done for the farmer – my whole life I’ve worked here every day for him and now, when I’m tired and old he wants to forget about me under a pile of earth.”
He started to get really, really, really MAD.
Fumingly MAD.
He’d given everything to the farmer, and this was his final payment. With intense fury coursing through his body, he suddenly felt as alive as ever and driven with a burning determination not to give in and be crushed by this wretched, ungrateful treatment. He had to get out of the well, and he wasn’t planning to go back to work once he did.
As he stood there quaking with anger, he noticed that when his body shook, the soil piling up on his back would fall off and land around his feet. So he kept shaking it off, and then each time the soil hit the ground, he’d step up on top of it. So he kept shaking.
More and more earth kept pouring down for hours and hours, and as the time passed, the donkey stayed absolutely focused and determined. Hours went by, and it was nearly evening when finally the donkey had shaken off so much earth and climbed on top of it that he had nearly reached the well.
Summoning up all his energy, he took a single leap out of the top of the well, and freed himself from the shaft which the farmer had intended to be his grave. Running past the workers, he took the farmer by surprise and with a mighty kick, knocked him clean off his feet.
They never saw the donkey on that farm again. He wandered off up into the hills for a very well earned rest, and to enjoy his newly found freedom for the rest of his days…
What do you do when life is shoveling shit on top of you?
Do you give up? Or like the donkey in this story, do you find a way to turn adversity into advantage, to see the new opportunities which are presenting themselves? Apparent obstacles can provide incredible fuel for our determination and desire to reach our goals and realize our dreams. How do you use the challenges in your life?
I’d love to know your answers to any of these questions, and of course, I’d love it if you’d Tweet, Like and Share this story with your followers and friends. I don’t post many stories on my blog, but if you enjoyed this one, check out the first story I posted entitled How To Move a Mountain.

This is great story about domkey and the pit, it shows exactly how people react and what may motivate them to action.
Ha ha.. awesome story! People rise to the occasion when they have nothing to lose, true indeed.

Good for that Donkey, Brave, well done
It says a lot about determination doesn’t it. Where there’s a will there’s definitely a way.
The moral of the story is never give up. You can shake it off.
Great story Jym. It’s certainly inspiring.
Thanks, Liz

‘Where’s there’s a will, there’s a way’ is a tried and tested proverb. And it really does show in this story.
You’re right, just keep shaking it off and using it to take you higher…
Stay inspired!
Hey Jym,
Thanks for sharing this inspirational story with us. This quote is so true: “In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.” ~Albert Einstein
We can all relate to facing challenges and obstacles in our lives. The key is to embrace them and not give up and aim to turn them into opportunities.

Nice quote Mavis.
Embrace is a great word to use here. It’s not about denial or avoidance, but acceptance within a bigger picture and applying all our resources to move through the challenges we face.
Thanks for adding this
Hi Jym, Nothing like a good tale to get a message across. The Brothers Grimm knew that!
There certainly are times when we need to be just plain stubborn and ‘keep on keeping on’ till we finally break through.
And sometimes it does feel like we are stuck in the bottom of a well and nobody around us can hear us crying out for help. At times like that, we have to reach inside and draw on our own inner strength or else it will be ‘all over red rover’!
I’m sure we can all identify times in our lives when we have been in that situation. It’s at these times that we learn who we are, what we stand for, what we are made of. These are our ‘moments of truth’!
Great story, great post!

Too true Kisane. Those guys were masters of the fable!
Great point you added there – the Donkey had to find that resolve inside himself – no one else could do it for him.
These times are very powerful in revealing our inner strength. It’s easy to see opportunity and move forward when the going is good. It takes real courage to find your inner strength in times of adversity though.
Thanks, and thanks for your great comment
Hey Jym,
I remember the first time I read the story, guess it was on facebook, I kept thinking about it all day long.
It is a powerful illustration of how determination and a refusal to give up can sometimes be the deciding factor between winners and losers.
Thanks for sharing the story again!

…fear is the passion of slaves!
AH! You’ve heard this one too Tosin. It’s a great story isn’t it! It’s stuck with me since I first heard it a year or two ago…
You’re right – winning or losing can boil down to this simple fact of being determined to find a way to succeed (or not)
Thanks for sharing your thoughts here mate
Hi Jym,
what a teaching story, amazing. Life consists of a mixture of opportunity and difficulty. Sometimes there is more opportunity, sometimes there is more difficulty. What we do when there is more difficulty and how we discipline our disppointment is crucial for our life.
Thanks for sharing this story.
Take care

Life offers us a balance of both difficulty and opportunity. But they are always intertwined – one cannot exist without the other. How we interpret every situation, especially the ones that seem more challenging, will dictate the results we achieve in life…

Hi Jym,
One of the better inspirational stories out there, it works for me
Obstacles are stepping stones; their function is to move you higher. When life seems to be getting tough it’s merely an invitation to grow, and grow quickly.

Love that you used the word ‘invitation’ there Ryan…
It is an invitation – we always have the choice to take it, or leave it. I absolutely agree with you, challenges are like a nudge towards some kind of change… The quicker we take the hint, the less we suffer!
I appreciate your added value here mate, and glad you enjoyed the story.
Hi Jym,
Thanks for sharing this pretty neat story. So true that the circumstance that is faced can brew up that strong determination to make a change or difference. When becoming angry as in this story, it certainly raises that energy of disbelief of how treatment like that could be done after all those years. That in turn, allows it to become more fuel for determination.
Just love that story.
Much appreciation for sharing,

The power of our anger of negative emotions can and should be harnessed and used. Our anger can be destructive, or it can be a great driver to create – it’s up to us!

Fantastic story, Jym! I love how things always appear right when I need them
. The story felt like confirmation and encouragement for me because I’m currently experiencing some challenges that are definitely serving as fuel for achieving my goals. I like the image it has provided me . . . I might have to print out a picture of a donkey and post it on the bulletin board in my office. I used to have a question there: “What’s the opportunity in this situation?” I like the donkey idea better
. I most definitely look at things from the perspective of what I can learn from the situation. Things still hurt. There are still periods of intense emotion and times when I’m not so strong. But in an overall sense, I look for the opportunties and move in that direction.

Challenges can be the fuel for our development and growth – but you have to see them as such and find a way to turn adversity into opportunity.
There’s always a way, though sometimes the opportunity can take a while to emerge. Have faith and trust that you will work things out for the best (you will!).
Shake off the shit and keep moving on up!
Thanks for sharing some of your feelings and experience with the essence of this story.
Great story, Jym! It is a great way to teach about the importance of determination and the idea that we can use our frustration with the way things are as motivation to improve our situation.
Exactly Steve.
Stories are a fantastic way to learn because they bypass the logical brain and get absorbed on a much deeper level than with linear, rational learning techniques.
Glad you got the message mate and thanks for sharing your thoughts here too
Great story Jym.. sometimes pain is one of our biggest motivator and it help us get what we want. the fear of failing gives us energy to keep pushing forward and get our goals. Difficulty makes us stronger and every time we face difficulty we gain more experience and knowledge. Adversity strengthen the mind. Every successful person face a lot of adversity in their business before they succeed.
Have a great weekend Jym and God bless.
